EDITORIAL / 33rd RENCONTRES TRANS MUSICALES

Lately, the borders have been fading away, the periods have been blending and the genres intermingling under the combined efforts of certain musicians scattered all over the globe. The past becomes present, and then projects itself in the future. Behind turntables or with machines, using modern or vintage instruments, these people reclaim a language in perpetual (r)evolution. From Rennes to Reykjavik, Mexico to Paris, Barcelona to Bergen, Los Angeles to London, Clermont-Ferrand to Glasgow, some people mess with geographic and melodic notions, shake up certainties and draw enthusiasm. Yes, it is possible to leave the trodden paths, to offer an alternative to the ambient humming – this mission seemingly impossible to some, the Trans strive to fulfil since more than three decades.
With new technologies, new spaces and means of distribution, it is becoming more and more imperative to stay sharp, click, travel - literally as well as figuratively – forget about preconceived notions
to better take the opposite direction to ramping standardisation in so many fields –artistic or other. Despite the multiplicity and the specialisation of musics, they can all still claim a universal dimension, whether they are called dubstep or garage rock, grime or reggae, hip-hop or folk... as long as we invest time and interest. Cultivate our curiosity.
Because the Trans Musicales remain more than ever true to their initial philosophy, they are an appropriate melting pot to pin point this melodic and colourful exuberance. They insist on filling their part as seeking heads, driven by a rebellious spirit, wiping away with the back of their hand the monotony that haunts a sometimes too cautious world. Today and more than ever, the Trans Musicales owe it to themselves to bear witness to this fantastic and intoxicating story, whose first page was written back in 1979. Today we write the 33rd chapter under your eyes and your ears.
